Gun Safety and Hunting Tips You Need! | Guns & Ammo Greenville NC

There’s nothing that Greenville Marine values more than safety when it comes to guns and ammo in Greenville, NC. That’s why we wanted to give you the tips you need when it comes to gun safety and hunting. A lot of mishaps and accidents happen when people don’t quite recognize the weight of responsibility when it comes to fire arms. Guns and ammo are designed to kill, and that comes with a huge responsibility for those handling it. Safe fire-arm practices are second-nature to the well-trained hunter. Follow the tips below to be a effective, responsible, and safe hunter this Summer!

1. Know Your Safe “Zone of Fire”

Staying strictly within your zone of fire is one of the most important practices when it comes to gun safety. Your zone of fire is a 45 degree area in front of you. You are never to fire outside of these 45 degrees. Anything outside of it is not within your eye sight and is not considered safe to pursue. Your zone of fire is also changes every step and move you make. Make sure each position you take is safe. Be aware of where your other hunting partners are and be sure to communicate with your partners constantly.

2. Practice Control

Hunting can be thrilling, but be aware that this can also lead to reckless behavior. Make sure that you keep your excitement in check and that you don’t let it cloud your judgement. If you feel like your excitement is getting the better of you, then you need to slow down and take a break. You should also communicate this to your partners, and they should respect your decision. Safety is the most important part of the hunt, and no kill is worth risking safety. It’s also statistically proven that the calmer hunters yield better results.

3. Practice Makes Perfect

Going to a shooting range and practicing hitting targets is important for any hunter at various levels. Before you try hunting for the first time, have new equipment, or you’re well seasoned, you should constantly be practicing your skills. You should be consistently hitting your targets at the range. If you are finding that you don’t do well at the range for whatever reason, then you are not ready to hunt. That’s okay! Practice is the best way to get better, and if you’re determined, then you should be ready in no time!

4. Know Your Target

If you can’t clearly make out what you’re shooting, then you should not shoot! Anything you shoot should be 100% clear to you. It’s not worth taking the risk.

How to Decide on the Right Boat | Guns & Ammo Greenville NC

Greenville Marine & Sport Center in Greenville NC knows that with Summer just around the edge that many of us are going to be hitting the water soon. Buying a boat is one way you can hit the water in style, however, this can be a hard decision to make. We’ve compiled a list of things that you must consider before you buy a new boat.

1. Is it Affordable?

Too many buy the boat of their dreams without thinking about the true cost and responsibility that comes with owning a boat. There is the cost of the boat itself, the monthly maintenance cost, and the annual cost. Boats are also extremely inefficient when it comes to gas or diesel because the boat uses more energy pushing through water. When thinking about the expenses, the general rule is you should expect to pay between 10-15% of the replacement value per year.

2. What Will The Boat be Used For?

Boats are used for many different ways. The best thing to do will be to consult your salesperson. Some people use boats for fishing, sailing, cruising, water sports, etc. The list is endless. Be sure to think of all the people in your family and what their desires are for trips on the water. This will help you decide what type of boat is the best for you.

3. Where Will it Be Used?

This really comes down to whether you boat will be used for salt water or for freshwater. You need to determine how big your trips are, how many people would be going, what activities will you be doing, etc. Again it’s best to consult your salesperson on the places you’ll want to take your boat. You should also learn what are in the boat’s capabilities.

4. New or Used?

This plays a lot in to deciding whether or not the particular boat is affordable. Though older boats will be more affordable, you also have to be aware of the cost it will take to maintain an older boat. You should buy a new boat if you can afford to have someone fix it, or you have the time and knowledge to fix it yourself.

5 Fishing Hacks | Guns & Ammo Greenville NC

Greenville Marine & Sport Center in Greenville, NC has picked up a couple of fishing tricks over the years. We made a list to make fishing more effective and fun! Here are some tips to try out!

1. Mark Up Your Soft Baits

Add some realistic patterns to your soft-plastic baits with some permanent markers.  This gives them a unique fish-attracting appearance.

2. Cut Down on Tangles

The  wind knot can be prevented and greatly reduced if you flip over the bail manually on your rotating reel after you cast. This will prevent the line from twisting as it moves its way from the bail to the line roller, which is what it does when if the bail snaps shut by itself by turning the reel handle.

3. Dress-Up The Jigs

Diamond jigs are a classic striped bass, bluefish and cod lure that can be dressed with a bare hook, a colored tube, or a feathered Siwash hook. The faster you can switch out these different dressed hooks to find the color and style that the fish are responding to, the faster you will be into fish. To do this, replace the split ring on the bottom of your diamond jig with a sturdy lure clip and swap out hook styles.

4. Stay on Top

If when you’re fishing a topwater lure and the stripers keep messing up on the plug or tail-slapping, try stopping and count slowly to five. Lures that are bobbing on the surface seem like a stunned baitfish, which are seen as easy pickings to the fish, and this will often draws more of an aggressive strike.

5. Cripple Your Baitfish

Frisky bait can be tough for predators to chase down. To slow it down, try clipping the tail fin with a pair of small scissors down the middle of the tail.
