Check out the touchscreen displays aboard the newest boats. Whether it’s a proprietary or private-labeled screen and system or one bearing the badge of a major marine-electronics-maker, fingertip access to navigation, engine data, accessory and lighting control is now the norm, not an exotic option. That you can stream the game or a movie to these screens from the devices we all now carry just adds that much more convenience. Sure, signal strength plays a part in that, but getting a signal was just as important back in the good old days, when we tuned in programming on a transistor radio powered by a 9-volt battery.

Some things never change. I can speak from experience when I tell you that the fun of being afloat aboard a boat of your own is one of those things.

Happy holidays from Greenville Marine! Greenville Marine & Sport Center is your local boat, motor, and trailer dealer, and we’ve been serving Pitt and Beaufort counties and Eastern North Carolina for 48 years. Our experienced sales and service staff would love to help you any way we can!

The first step in buying a boat is perhaps the most important: figure out exactly what type of boat will best fit your needs. What kind of activities do you plan to do on the water? Do you see yourself fishing mostly? Cruising with family and friends? Pulling kids on a tube? These needs are crucial in the boat-buying process.

The first step in the boat-buying process is also the most important—determining exactly what type of boat will best fit the needs and wants of both yourself and those you plan to bring along for the ride. Those needs and wants are typically determined by what type of activities you want to pursue on the water. You may also be interested in learning more upfront about the overall costs of boat ownership.

After you choose the right boat type for your needs, you’ll need to decide if you’d like to buy a new or used boat. This decision will mostly depend on your budget and the kind of maintenance you plan to do on your boat.

The next step is to ensure the boat you’re buying is a certified boat. Then, you’ll want to figure out exactly what you can afford; this boat loan calculator can help. Many people end up financing their boat; you should also think about boat financing and how to get a boat loan.

Next up: shop for your boat—figure out where and when to buy. Learn more about boat values and pricing, including how to negotiate your purchase. Then, once you’ve found the boat of your dreams: if applicable, conduct a sea trial and a marine survey.

And finally! Close the deal—find out more about boat registrationinsurance and taxes.

We would be so happy to help you find the boat of your dreams, and we have plenty of boats in our inventory that we think you’d love. Contact us to get this process started! We know you won’t regret it.

If you plan to sell your boat on your own but you have questions about how to price and how to advertise your boat, look no further! We’ve got you covered. From Discover Boating, here are some great tips:

Pricing Your Boat

Once it’s cleaned and prepped, you need to nail down a reasonable asking price for your boat. You can start by checking the NADA guides. But remember that the values they publish are estimates, at best. The boat’s condition will have a huge impact on its value, which those guides can’t take into account. So you should look at listings for similar boats online, in magazines, and at boat broker websites as well. As you do so, remember that the boat’s value will also be impacted by geography, and may bring a higher price in areas where boats are in high demand but a lower price in areas where they aren’t. The type of boating you’ve done also plays a role, since boats used in freshwater tend to bring higher prices than those used in saltwater. Even seasonality can affect boat pricing, because many people are more apt to buy a boat in the spring than in the late fall or winter.

After you settle on a figure, remember that a boat’s only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If the price is too high it may sit on the market for months at a time. Since it can be so hard to nail down a value, some boat sellers list at a starting point and gauge the interest level for a month or so. Then they drop the asking price a few percent for each week or month that goes by after that, until a significant number of buyers begin to show interest.

How to Advertise a Boat For Sale

With the boat fully prepped and an asking price in mind, it’s time to start generating some leads. In this day and age most people advertise their boat on a number of different internet sites that offer classifieds. Some are free, some are not, and all offer unpredictable results. You may also want to advertise in a local paper or boating magazine. And don’t neglect the tried and true tactic of simply hanging a “For Sale” sign on the boat and placing it in a high-visibility area near a busy road or marina.

How to Prepare Your Boat for Hurricane Season | Boat Dealers | Greenville NC | Rocky Mount NC

Unfortunately, hurricane season is upon us, and if you live in an area that will be affected by big storms, you’ll need to be prepared. This includes preparing your boat so that it will be safe regardless of the weather. At Greenville Marine, we sell amazing new and used boats, but we also want to help you get prepared for bad weather. Here are some best practices for preparing your boat for a hurricane:

  • Strap down your boats ashore. Boats left on shore tend to suffer less damage than boats left at docks during severe weather, but keep in mind that boats can still receive damage on shore too. If you use jackstands normally to support the hulls of your boat on land, they can be rocked back and forth from the wind, and this can cause damage over time. For even more peace of mind, store your boats on shore on high ground. This will limit the chance of your boat being underwater, even if it’s on land.
  • Store your boats at marinas with floating docks and tall pilings. These allow boats to rise and fall with surge without stretching and stressing lines. Sometimes boats on floating docks receive no damage at all from hurricanes, while boats on fixed docks nearby are badly damaged.
  • Make plans before a hurricane warning is posted. Don’t wait and risk the damage to your boat, especially if you live in a hurricane-prone area. Review your dock contract for language that may require you to take certain steps or to leave the marina when a hurricane may happen. Ask the staff at your marina what their plans are for severe weather.

We want you all to stay safe, and if there’s anything we can do to ensure your boat’s safety, please let us know. On another note, if you’re looking to buy a new or used boat, look no further!
